Jio and US-based T-Mobile have reached an agreement to provide customers with roaming services on their respective 5G networks, marking what the companies describe as the world’s first 5G standalone roaming system. Through the arrangement, customers of both networks will receive only a 5G signal while using roaming services.

The achievement was made possible with the support of Siniverse’s interoperability system. According to the companies, the development is a significant demonstration of the possibility of providing a seamless next-generation network experience across international borders.

The new arrangement will enable T-Mobile customers to experience genuine 5G standalone (5G SA) roaming while travelling internationally. The companies said this is the first time such a facility has been made a reality globally. Higher speeds, lower latency and more reliable connectivity are among the key features of 5G SA roaming.

The technology is also expected to support next-generation applications that require advanced global connectivity, including Internet of Things (IoT), real-time communication and immersive technologies. Siniverse’s connectivity platform played a crucial role in accelerating the global expansion of 5G SA roaming by enabling secure and seamless interconnection between networks in different countries.

This is a significant step forward for the global wireless industry. We began this journey in 2020 by building the infrastructure for a 5G standalone future. Today, together with Jio India, we are continuing this progress globally. The technology will help ensure that the 5G experience continues seamlessly when moving from one country to another, whether for streaming, sharing travel videos or using business applications,” said T-Mobile Chief Network Officer Ankur Kapoor.

> “This is not just a roaming achievement, but the beginning of new possibilities that emerge when two leading 5G standalone networks work together. From different consumer and enterprise experiences to AI-powered services, this lays the foundation for next-generation cross-network services. The future of 5G SA is about creating seamless, interoperable new value,” said Jio Head of International Network, Partnership and Services Mark Yarkosky.
